Mick Loates
A painter of wildlife, portraits, nudes & seascapes, Mick is
perhaps best known for his depiction of fishes in their natural
surroundings.
Born in South London in 1947 Mick studied at Sidcup & Ravensbourne
Schools of Art. Like so many aspiring artists of that era he was
funnelled into advertising, a period recalled as wasted & frustrating.
Leaving London to pursue a career in Wildlife Art initial commissions
included illustrating for the RSBP & Natural History Publishers.
Although he restricts medium pretty much to oils & graphite
the majority of paintings are carried out in transparent watercolour
with overglazes to achieve depth of tone. A dry-brush technique
is visible in most works...
